Moving to the upper back, you can start by working the shoulders and hands. Place the right hand on the top of the shoulder and the left hand on the lower back. Bring up the left hand, along the side of the spine, while lowering the right hand across the shoulder blade.
Use a firm stroke in order to work the muscles. Move both hands up, toward the shoulder and slide down the arm. Place the arm behind the person's back and start working on the shoulder blade muscles, which should stand out in this position. Use your thumb to stroke along the shoulder blade and seek out any stiff spots in the muscles.
Lastly, move up to the neck for the final part of the massage. Choose one shoulder and turn the person's head in the opposite direction in order to make the muscles stand out.
Start at the base of the neck and work the shoulder muscles with your fingers and thumb, moving toward the arm. The muscles at the back of the neck are best massaged with the thumbs, in tight circles.
